Bulgaria
is situated in Southeastern Europe, on the eastern part of the Balkan
Peninsula. To the north it borders on Romania, to the west on Serbia
and Macedonia, to the south on Greece and Turkey and to the east -
on the Black sea.

Bulgaria
possesses a variety of natural forms.
Its territory includes a part of the lower Danube plain, the Black sea cost, the mountain ranges Rila, Pirin, Stara Planina or the Balkan range, and the Rhodopes, Mount Vitosha, as well as hills, lakes and lowdlands. The Bulgarian mountains are easily accessible and the presence of towns and villages in them that have preserved the authentic Bulgarian spirit and hospitality. Lots of rivers cross Bulgaria's territory, most famous are Iskur, Mesta, Maritsa and Strouma. |

The
local climate is temperate with cold snowy winters and hot summers.
Four seasons. Average temperature (April - September): + 23 °C. Cold
winter with snowfalls, average temperature: 0 °C. The average yearly
temperature is 10.5 °C.
A Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and mild, humid winters, prevails in the valley of the Southwestern Rhodope Mountains. The northern borders of the climatic zone is the Balkan Range. |

Thirty-eight
percent of Bulgaria's territory is covered by forests and woodlands
and there are many rivers, waterfalls, lakes and mineral springs.
The Bulgarian fauna is no less interesting, with almost 13 000 animal
species and subspecies, or about 14 percent of all European species.
Bulgaria has a number of protected areas: the Pirin National Park; Sinite Kamani National Park; the Bourgas Wetlands; Steneto Reserve; the Parangalitza Reserve and the Srebarna Nature Reserve, a World Heritage site and home to over a hundred species of indigenous and migrating birds. |

Archeological
excavations, monuments and ancient buildings can be found all over
Bulgaria. They are reminders of the country's long history, gathering
together the present and the past. The most famous among them are:
Varna's ancient necropolis which is a proof of the first European
civilization, and the world's oldest gold dated 4600 - 4200 B.C.;
The town of Nessebar established as a Thracian settlement which is
on the World Heritage List; The Kazanluk Thracian Cupol Tomb dated
to the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century B.C., preserving
the only authentic monuments of Hellenic painting, also included in
the List of World Cultural Heritage.; The biggest Amphitheatre in
the Balkan Peninsula outside Greece, dated from the 2nd century; The
Rila Monastery (9th century) which is the biggest monum of Bulgarian
Architecture from that time; Koprivshtiza, Kotel and Zheravna - three
villages in the Balkan mountain that have preserved their original
architecture from period of the National Revival, and so on.

Bulgaria's
traditions are still alive in local arts and crafts. The famous Rhodope's
colourful blankets, rugs and carpets, fretworks and pottery, preserve
the joy and vividness of local traditions.
The world is already charmed by Bulgarian songs and dances. One can get in touch with this breath-taking kind of magic at any of the picturesque folklore festivals which gather together several generations of singers, musicians and dancers, keeping alive the heart and soul of Bulgaria. Born in the roofs of tradition, modern Bulgarian culture, too, triumphs in the world. A quatrain of the great Bulgarian poet Hristo Botev was published in the Sorbonne, Boris Christoff, Raina Kabaivanska, and many others have become not only Bulgarian, but world-famous opera singers, the "Mystery of Bulgarian Voices" has astounded melomaniacs, the paintings of Vladimir Dimitrov-The Master can be seen in the world's finest galleries. |
